The Swedish capital is made up of 18 islands connected by beautiful bridges and the abundance of water provides the city with its unique character. Referred to as the 'Venice of the North', Stockholm has a historical center with more than 750 years of history. The Old Town, or Gamla Stan, is characterized by cobbled streets, crooked buildings, and gothic churches, as well as boasting the Royal Palace, excellent bars and cafes, and a number of shops. Stroll around the area and drink in the old world charm and stunning architecture.
A mix of old and new, there are many fantastic modern elements to the city as well as some great modern cultural centers. Enjoy an afternoon wandering around one of the museums of art galleries including the Vasa Museum (or Ship Museum), which displays a restored ship, the Thiel Gallery, the Hallwylska Museet, the Historical Museum, the Modern Museum, and the Aquaria Water Museum to name a few! Or if you are a fan of the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson, then you have to visit Södermalm for the tour!
Stockholm has an exciting night life scene, and the clubs and bars are packed with locals and tourists nearly ever day of the year. Head to the center of the city for the best bars and clubs, choose from old Swedish charm in traditional bars to cutting edge techno clubs. Or for a different experience head to the Ice Bar, where even the glasses are made of ice. Just be prepared that going out in Stockholm is definitely not cheap, but still offers some fantastic clubbing experiences.
