Save to your city mapThe Archbasilica of St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano) is the Bishop of Rome's Cathedral, who is also the Pope, and is more important than all the churches in the Catholic Church. Rather than simply being a cathedral it is therefore given the title of Archbasilica. Although it is located outside the Vatican City, and in Rome itself, it holds extraterritorial status as one of the properties of the Holy See, similar to the condition of foreign embassies. Aside from its importance, the Basilica boast a spectacular interior and is definitely worth a visit.
