Save to your city mapThe Praça do Comércio is the largest square in Lisbon. It’s commonly known as the Terreiro do Paco, or the Palace Square, because before the earthquake in 1755, the Ribeira palace stood in its place. The square faces the Tagus river, originally with the purpose of welcoming the guests that arrived in Lisbon by boat, and is graced by a statue of King José I at its center. It was also the chosen location for the assassination of King Carlos I in 1908. The whole ares is surrounded by government buildings including the City Hall.
