Save to your city mapThe Castelo de São Jorge looks out over the city from its vantage point. Visit the castle for not only fantastic views, but also to discover the history of the fortification which dates back to as early as 200 B.C. The top of the hill has been a settlement for centuries but the first real fortification was built around 48 B.C. when Lisbon was a Roman settlement. In the centuries that followed, the hill was used by Greeks, Carthagians and Moors. After being captured during the Second Crusade, Castelo de São Jorge was renovated and expanded multiple times. It is historically also an important location for special occasions such as when Vasco da Gama returned from India. After various setbacks the castle was completely renovated in 1940 and several new buildings around the castle were demolished to restore its historical authenticity. It is now a National Monument and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lisbon.
