Built on the banks of the Tagus River, Lisbon is the largest city in Portugal, and a wonderful excuse for a trip to the sun! The city has a multitude of great sights including the Belem Tower, St. George’s Castle, and the Jeronimus Monastery. So dive into the varied history of the city before having a siesta to escape from the afternoon heat.
Exploring the entire city on foot can be challenging as it is situated on a number of fairly steep hills. But prepare yourself for a hike and enjoy the beautiful view from Bairro Alto, or the high neighborhood, before continuing on to the up-market shopping district of Chiado. Make sure you eat exclusively authentic Portuguese food as its deliciously tasty, often from recipes that have been passed down the generations. The local dish, bacalhau, is on the menu in nearly every restaurant, a salted cod that is never prepared the same way twice! While enjoying your dinner you will often be treated to a Fado performance, one of the musical treasures of Portugal.
