Save to your city mapThe Phoenix Park is a large park that was originally used as hunting ground for deer and pheasants, around which a wall was built to contain the animals. In total it covers around 700 hectares, and is one of the largest city parks in the world. It includes several notable sights, including the Dublin Zoo, the residence of the President of Ireland, the residence of the American Ambassador and Ashtown Castle. There are also several monuments, such as the Papal Cross; a 35m tall cross erected for the visit of the Pope in 1979, the Wellington Monument; an obelisk that is the largest in Europe, and the Phoenix Column. The Phoenix Column is situated on the square on Chesterfield Avenue, a boulevard that runs through the park. The park itself is still largely natural, with grass and forest areas, and deer.
