Save to your city mapThe Berlin Wall was built by the German Democratic Republic in 1961 to prevent migration from West Berlin to East Berlin and East Germany. The 155km long barrier was part of the "Iron Curtain" and is considered a symbol of the Cold War. It was dismantled in 1989, due to radical political changes. Today, the remains of the wall are amongst the most visited landmarks in Berlin. The 1.3 km painted section of the Berlin Wall known as the "East Side Gallery" is situated at the Mühlenstrasse in Friedrichshain, near the centre of Berlin. The Berlin Wall Memorial and the Wall Documentation Centre are located at Bernauer Strasse, and offers visitors an unique overview of the history of the Berlin Wall. The famous crossing point 'Checkpoint Charlie' can be found on Friedrichstraße in the Friedrichstadt neighborhood. Other preserved segments of the Berlin Wall can also be found in the Freedom Park, Niederkirchnerstraße, the American Embassy, the Allied Museum and the John F. Kennedy School.
