Antwerp is the capital of the Dutch speaking area of Belgium, and is situated not far from the Dutch border. It has a beautiful train station which is with walking distance of the city center and many great historical highlights including the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Town Hall. The name of the city is derived from the Dutch word “handwerpen”, which literally means to throw hands. According to a legend, Brabo - a local hero, threw a giant's hand into the river. A statue depicting this act can be found in front of the Town Hall.
Antwerp is a great place to visit at any time of the year. The winter season is generally busy with the Christmas markets, and the 'Solden" sale in January when the whole of Belgium swarms to Meir Street to grab some bargains.
